People claim they love Hip Hop, but think its only a genre of music. I'm sure if you mention the name Kool Herc people will look at you with confusion. I think it is important to know your culture if you are going to claim you are part of it.

Kool Herc was born Clive Campbell in Jamaica April 16 1955. Later in his life he began to spin records at parties. Using hard funk, rock and records with latin percussion he created Hip Hop. He would repeat a certain part of the record with only instruments playing so that people can dance to them. As a DJ he would grab the mic and speak rhythmically. That is now known as rapping. People would dance to his break beats. Understanding that breaking was a street slang for getting excited, he began to call the people who would dance to his breakbeats breakers or b-boys and b-girls. He would have graffiti artists create art work for his house parties and block parties. One of the main roles of graffiti artist was to create tasteful flyers to pass out to people. With out knowing, Kool Herc gave birth to what is now known as Hip Hop.
