Gay Pride @ Albizu Campos High!

Today was a day geared towards awareness and acceptance of the LGBTQ community at our school. To continue with the theme in my classroom, I printed this image for peots. They then wrote poetic pieces on pride. I typed them up for students who were willing to share, and here they go!

Please enjoy & comment.

See there was a tear rolling down my face as I began to write this
So I closed my eyelids
And let it fall, because if love is blind then feeling is sightless
And me?
I've been nightless, dayless, restless
Because I can't come out to say
I'm gay
Secrets underneath the rug
The same place I get my dirt done
The same ones I hurt from, the same ones I learn from
Intentions blindsided by intuituon
While all you have to do is listen
But you won't listen
You'll keep thinking I'll grow up to marry a man
Being the ideal family
But I see a man in me
I want to marry a woman
Is that too hard to see?
I'm proud of being gay
I'm proud of being me
That's all I want you to see

My daughter is colored, and she is beautiful
My best friend's bisexual, and our love is mutual
Rainbow colored flags are not an abomination
It has all colors, so it represents refusal of discrimination
In a world of hate, we place a shadow over gays
To be gay is to be happy, so lets be gay for others sexual taste
I am not a lesbian
I am not bi
We are all equal in God's eyes

I am proud
For what I stand for
Ya, I'm Boricua
That's for damn sure
I'm not going to have you tell me what to do
I'm a Taino soldier
So I'm stronger than you
You should be proud for being gay
Lesbian
Or bisexual too
So if you are proud
I am too
If I am proud
So are you
We are proud

The visual
Is just as clear as digital
But people want the usual
Female and male
From tale to tale
Not off scale
No gays
No both ways
No play
But it's just a phase
They try to put people in their place
But not today

- Christopher Velazquez

Damn, she's beautiful
Hips, eyes, smile, thighs
Yeah, I'm checking her out
But I can't say anything out loud
Always hiding who I am
Just to make you proud
It's not fair
Living inside the closet only 'cuz I'm scared
Being true to myself & being happy
Or losing my only sister who's been there
This just can't be
Hurting because I know I can't be myself around you
So quick to judge me & my beliefs but you
Should want me to be happy too
Looking up to you as a child and wanting to be who
You are
To now seeing today and understanding
When being unhappy has gone too far
A phase?
Oh, no sweetie
That's not the case
I am a bisexual female
Who will no longer chose your selfish steps to trace
Joy & happiness within myself
I am now able to admit
My bisexuality is the lifestyle
& I chose to commit

Discrimination is everywhere
Even when it doesn't allow itself to be presented
And being yourself isn't a job
It's just a way you want to be represented
So being afraid to show your inner self
Would be deceiving yourself
And no one should ever have that much control
Over your mental health
So the fist step to starting the cure
Is loving yourself
And owning the belt
Remember pride comes from within
And loving who you are
Could never be a sin

How could you say that you love me
When I talk about my wedding
You say you wouldn't come by me
Is it 'cause I'm a lesbian?
Or 'cause my girlfriend ain't Mexican
Maybe it's the fact that you'd be embarrassed if your family found out
Growing up I was taught to clean & cook
So when I get married I'd be the best wife
A wife to a man
A man I will never connect with
But, woman...
I connect
Their beautiful smile
Their big, loving hearts
The way we can be affectionate
Today I am proud
To say
I am a Mexican
And a lesbian!

Represented by a rainbow
Because they shine after the rain
They keep their head high
Even though they suffer through pain
Some hide their identity
Because they're rejected by society
I don't go the way they do
But they can count on me to
Support them
Whether it's him & him
Or her & her
Their pride connects with me
I hope those who are hiding
Can set themselves free
